Come Closer by Sara Gran
I gave Come Closer by Sara Gran 4 out of 5 pages. This is a
short novel leaving the reader with a tremendous amount of unease. The reader
is introduced to Amanda, the main character who thinks she has the perfect life
with her husband Ed. Amanda is a well-adjusted woman, working a high paying job
and being the picture-perfect wife. All of this changes the day, they hear an
odd, continuous, tapping within the loft. It only seems to effect Amanda and
then it is all downhill from there with Amanda being taken on the ride of her
life.
While a short novel, there was a lot packed into the pages.
Vivid descriptions are laid out from page to page and horror ensues as Amanda
continues to give in to her demons. While reading Come Closer, goosebumps were
the norm as the story left a lot of chill and uneasiness as the author
describes the trials and tribulations of Amanda and the spiraling of her white
picket fence life. The story offered a different view, focusing on the internal
voice of Amanda and how she views the various events happening, rather than the
outside view and description of the characters. Despite the events Amanda is
going through, I took a liking to her as she developed. I am not sure what that
means about me but I felt like Amanda started to come into the person she
really was while not under the thumb of Ed and the expectations of society.
I would highly recommend this short story as it is an easy,
flowy read with the intersection of horror and supernatural. The perfect read for Halloween!
