The Relic Hunters by David Leadbeater

I gave The Relic Hunters by David Leadbeater 2 out of 5 pages.

This book is the first book from The Relic Hunters series. I downloaded this book on a whim, as it sounded intriguing and promising featuring secret societies, stolen treasure, the CIA and thieves.

The reader is introduced to mastermind Guy Bodie and his team of thieves who are enlisted by the CIA to assist in solving a heist committed by a powerful secret society. Guy and his team are drawn into a race against time to find one of the Seven Wonders of the World, thought to be long lost. Will they succeed or will they fall victim to the secret society?

At first this book really drew me in- I mean who doesn’t love secret societies, lost relics and CIA coverups? However, while the book had a fast paced, intense start, it really fell short. It felt like the characters all just existed with no background and no depth to them. All the reader was subjected to was what each character brought to the team such as who the hot one was, the old one, the computer geek. The banter back and forth was predictable and seemed almost forced between all the players.

Not to mention, there was a lot of holes within the plot line, leaving a lot to be desired. The situations the characters found themselves in were predictable and overused. It left me wanting more. It was fast-paced but to a fault because there was no description of events. They simply just happened. I didn’t feel like I was experiencing what the characters were experiencing. At times, the plot was all over the place to the point, that I would have to read and re-read to make sure I didn’t miss something. The reader was left wondering why exactly did this secret society steal what they did and why this team was chosen to be the elite to uncover the motive- which by the way we never found out.

At the end of the day, I would not recommend taking the time to read this. I only gave two stars because of how the story initially began.
